Minnesota's 48 native orchids are at risk. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum will expand conservation of species through propagation and banking and begin restoration planting research in the program's second phase.
The Avon Hills area is a unique 65,000-acre glacial moraine landscape located in Stearns County just west of St. Cloud. It has been identified as having statewide ecological significance and includes the highest concentration of native plant communities in the county – including oak and maple-basswood forests, tamarack and mixed-hardwood swamps, and wet meadows – and several rare plants and animal species, including American ginseng, cerulean warbler, red-shouldered hawk, and Blanding’s turtle. To preserve the 1915 one room schoolhouse on the Redwood County fairgrounds by repairing windows, doors, stucco exterior, and replacement of the cupola on the roof.
Indigenous people have always used stories to preserve and teach culture to each succeeding generation. Through this project, the Minnesota Historical Society will collect, record and interpret stories specific to the Jeffers Petroglyphs site.
The stories from tribal elders will be recorded and transcribed in their native language as well as in English, culminating in written interpretations that will be made available to a wide audience of scholars, students and the general public.
In phase two of this project, stories relating to the Jeffers Petroglyphs historic site told by Dakota elders will be transcribed, translated and made available to students, teachers and the general public. In phase one, the Minnesota Historical Society collected, recorded and interpreted the stories. The stories will be made accessible in Dakota and in English via the internet, DVD and also at Jeffers Petroglyphs. This project helps preserve and teach Dakota language and culture.
To create a permanent, outdoor historical art sculpture, and honor the legacy of female contributors to agriculture in a new venue, "Women in Agriculture Day."
Mille Lacs Lake is recognized as one of the premier walleye producing lakes in the world. The current water quality of the lake is good, however recent monitoring of the lake and its watershed indicates the potential to develop problems. Since 1997, the Mille Lacs Lake Watershed Management Group has worked to preserve the water quality of Mille Lacs Lake. Five priority projects were identified by the Group partners in an effort to preserve water quality. Support for these projects was provided by a grant from the Clean Water Fund.
To produce display panels of the history of Nicollet County Fair. This project includes partnerships with the Nicollet County Historical Society, the 4-H extension staff, the fair board, and community members.
