The project goal is to enhance the Ojibwe language skills of the Minisinaakwaang young people interested in learning and carrying on the traditions of the community. This initiative will increase the number of young people using the language and ensuring that our ceremonies are conducted in the Ojibwe language. The grantees approach connects the first language speakers of the Minisinaakwaang community with the Ojibwe language apprentices that have made an investment in their ceremonies.
The goal of this project is to expand Ojibwe language class availability on the Bois Forte Reservation in terms of both the number and levels offered. This project will use local experts and form partnerships with existing language preservation programs to implement a plan to address the revitalization and preservation of the Native language on the Bois Forte Indian Reservation. The long term goal s to increase the Oibwe language fluency, proficiency, and literacy of the Bois Forte Indian Community. A local Elder language expert wil be hired at 16 hours per week.
The ISD 361 Indian Education Project will continue to work closely with the local school district, Indian education staff, and parent committee members in the evaluation process. The goal of this project is that American Indian secondary student participation in Ojibwe language and culture classes. Data will be reported to and reviewed by ISD 361 Indian Education program committee staff and parent committee quarterly. Tests will be administered. Attendance will be captured, and all date will be kept on file.
To document and archive the untold stories of Lao refugees in Minnesota, nine Lao families, totaling 13 individuals, were intervewed. The recountings of their historical experiences living in war, living in refugee camps and the transition and settlement of their immigration to Minnesota were recorded on video tape. The video footage was professionally edited, uploaded to Youtube and posted on the Lao Oral History Archives website.
Lao Culture Dance & Traditional Fashion Show will be implementing training youth for new leadership program. We are focusing on teaching students by passing on the skills & knowledge of traditional Performing art to a young generations to continue the tradition. We will make sure that the students that completed the program will be able to teach & passing on & continue the work to keep our tradition & rich Lao heritage and Culture. The youth leader will be great asset for our Communities.
A project to build capacity for poets to actively document and correct historical gaps in the Lao Minnesotan journey as we approach 50 years in the US. The project will include interdisciplinary exhibits and performances giving traditional artists a chance to develop new work with Lao poets that address ancient and modern history, myth, and cultural traditions, additionally publishing innovative and experimental collections on the Lao experience.
The Washington Conservation District (WCD) proposes a program to reduce overall phosphorus contributions to Lake St. Croix impaired for excess nutrients by converting maintained turf grass areas to native plant cover. Initial water quality benefit modeling results reveals up to a 99% reduction in total phosphorus runoff when converting an acre of turfgrass to an established native planting. Priority will be given to locations directly connected to Lake St. Croix or to receiving water bodies impaired that are a tributary of Lake St. Croix.
This project is a cooperative effort between Crow Wing and Itasca County to contract with RMB Laboratories to generate 65 lake assessment/trend analysis reports. The watershed protection model is an innovative and proactive approach to water resource management which is geared towards prioritizing areas of concern, targeting implementation strategies, and measuring their effectiveness. These assessments are also useful and understandable tools for lake associations and the public.
Itasca County is about to begin their water plan update process, which will be finished in 2017. This plan will be watershed protection oriented following a similar format to what Crow Wing County has done. We are currently in the process of have lake screening reports completed for 38 Itasca County lakes, and we would like to continue this program to add reports for an additional 34 lakes.
At the LaSalle Lake SRA, this project constructed a day use area (parking, picnic shelter, restrooms, boardwalk to fishing pier), campground vault toilet, carry-in boat landing, and a pedestrian bridge that leads to other recreation features.
This project is a fall 2024 exhibition of art created by self-identifying Latina women and non-binary, Latinx Minnesota-based artists with ancestral roots in Latin America. The exhibition is being co-curated by local visual artist, community muralist and educator, Zamara Cyan, and William Gustavo Franklin, an independent art curator, educator and author of the recent volume, Latin Art in Minnesota Conversations and What's Next (Afton Press, 2023).
Capitol Region Watershed District and the City of Lauderdale seek to improve water quality and flood control functions of Seminary Pond in Lauderdale. The project partners propose improvements to the pond including: 1) expansion of the pond?s storage area and 2) construction of an iron-enhanced sand filter. These improvements were identified as being the most cost-effective and will remove an estimated additional 2 tons of sediment and 9 pounds of phosphorus annually.
Dodge Nature Center will teach 10,000 Minnesota K-6 youth through standards-aligned, outdoor experiences and hands-on learning at our new Shepard Farm property.

Watershed based implementation funds will be used to target conservation practices utilizing the principles associated with Prioritize, Target and Measure as referenced in our Local Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan. The following are projects/practices, and their associated pollution reduction estimates, that are included in this budget request: (500 acres of Nonstructural BMPs) to protect/improve land management and reduce bacteria will reduce phosphorus by 65 lbs/yr, nitrogen by 520 lbs/yr, and sediment by 285 tons/yr.
Learning Law and Democracy: Principles of Democracy – Connecting civic education to principles that guided the nation's founders and continue to be our foundation today is the goal of LLAD's "Principles of Democracy" project for Minnesota's young people. By focusing on the why, how, and who of our system of government, K-12 students in and out of the classroom will be prepared to carry on Minnesota's civic tradition of informed civic participation. They will learn about the Constitution, structures of government, politics and active citizenship.
Learning Law and Democracy will enhance civic education across Minnesota by increasing the value of teachingcivics.org through redesigned architecture and an updated look and feel along with the addition of new lessons and user instructions. Student programs supported with this grant will also experience a redesign to capitalize on the renovated State Capitol and new Senate Building and will benefit from new partners and teachers with increased capacity to teach through professional development.
