Students used scale and proportion to create a model drawing. Students learned to transition ideas from word based brainstorming to visual based expression. Students designed, created, and installed a puzzle mural based on the Elk River as a theme.Drawing students will create drawings that are proportionate to the mural wall. These sketches will demonstrate their ability to conceive how the finished mural might look and ability to use scale to keep everything accurate and proportionate. A descriptive review of mural examples throughout history will generate a list of quality criteria for murals. A completed and installed mural will demonstrate that students are able to design, create, and install a puzzle mural. Group discussion after installing the panels will allow us to ask students about their favorite part of making the mural and if and how they think it will affect others.
Students used scale and proportion to create a model drawing. The mural panels were completely sketched out after 5 working days. To complete this, students had to measure and use the grid transfer system to create accurate proportions of their source photographs and sketches. Then the sketches were successfully transferred to the panels. Students learned to transition ideas from word based brainstorming to visual based expression. After the initial introduction to murals, the students brainstormed possible themes for the mural. A theme of local landmarks was agreed upon, which inspired a few students and one parent to take reference photos. Students then created drawings that were proportionate to the final panels, and made editing and compositional decisions to enhance the specific landmark and tie it into the overall mural design. One student went so far as to create a digital sketch of the 10th mural panel (including a detailed silhouette of an elk). Students designed, created, and installed a puzzle mural based on the Elk River as a theme. From planning and drawing to arranging the painted panels, a finished mural hanging in the community room represents the completion of the entire project. The drawing and painting was all completed by students.
