Support and provide a platform for artists at the Capri.
The Capri's arts programs provide artists, performers, and audience members a meaningful way to connect with each other and with the arts - designed to support working artists, community-convening, and relationship building on the Northside and throughout the broader Twin Cities metro community. We provide countless opportunities to create and implement ideas, to be together, and to experience, learn about, and produce art.
Capri programs that incorporate teaching and performing artists will include Summer and Saturday Camp Capri, Capri After School Theater (CAST), Capri Glee! Adult community choir, and Legends @ the Capri.
The Capri is a unique venue in North Minneapolis offering artists a space as flexible and encompassing for their creative teaching and performance pursuits. Through engaging productions and educational programs, we provide platforms for artists to showcase their talents to diverse audiences. Many of the teaching artists engaged with the Capri's youth arts immersion summer camps have been involved now for more than a decade, a testament to the impact these well-established programs have on the artists themselves as they guide and mentor youth on the beginning of their own artistic journeys while strengthening and expanding Teaching Artists own artistic and teaching skill sets.
We have defined tangible support through the Artist Support Structure Model. Specifically, we describe providing tangible support through the Model's pillars of compensation, professional development, networking opportunities, validation, and more.
Specifically for material supports, we provide stable salaries and benefits to our Artistic Associate, offering financial security that empowers them to explore part-time opportunities and maintain their artistic practice. This approach extends to accommodating leaves of absence and flexible/ schedules to support associates' engagements with other theater companies, locally and nationally. When working 20 hours/week or more, our Artistic Associate:
- Can receive full-time medical/dental benefits by paying a flat rate of less/ than $35 per paycheck for single coverage.
- Receive paid sick time.
- Accrue vacation.
- Is eligible to participate in the Section 125 plan and in the retirement 401K plan, which PCYC matches at 25%.
Artists for the Legends concert series receive variable pay, from $800 for an individual to $4,800 for an artist and his/her band. Contract artists generally earn between $40 and $75 per hour.
We also facilitate collaborations that enhance opportunities for artists to expand their reach and interactions with audiences. Partnering with other organizations, such as the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's on the Northside Series and the MSP Film Society and Minnesota Historical Society on the First Thursday Films, creates meaningful engagement for artists with new audiences. Our engaging film screenings, followed by discussions led by artistic film professionals, foster deeper connections between artists and communities. With the Capri's proximity to PCYC's PYC Arts & Tech High School, students will have opportunities to learn about and attend events that include varied artists and artistic disciplines.
By implementing programs and initiatives and creating spaces for artists to thrive, we directly contribute to the growth and success of working artists, nurturing a vibrant and resilient arts community.
$243,750 the second year is for a grant to Capri Theater to enrich and expand youth and adult arts programming and effective arts and educational offerings for youth, families, and emerging and accomplished artists.
