ACHF Arts Access
As a result of this series of activities, the audience members will be introduced to a tool (the listening map) to help them get more out of their orchestral music listening experiences, gaining knowledge about the music being performed and in so doing, adding to their appreciation of the music and its structure. Secondary school instrumental students will also be introduced to the listening map to help them get more out of their orchestral music listening experiences, also gaining knowledge about the music being performed, and through there discussion with the guest artists, they will have increased their awareness of the choices they may need to consider should they wish to have a vocation or avocation in music performance. Evaluation methods include a post-concert survey of the audience and a post-discussion survey of the music students. Both surveys will primarily be composed of multiple-choice questions. The post-discussion survey for students will also include opportunities for music students to respond with short answers, using their own words. The audience survey is intended to measure the impact of the listening map upon audience members and audience interest in future use of the listening map, a concert aid the BSO is looking at as a means to enhance audience understanding and appreciation of a concert's music. The survey of music students, meanwhile, is intended to assess the utility of such discussions for the students and if they felt they came away with a better understanding of what they might encounter on a career path of music performance. The BSO would also like to learn how it can better engage music students as it looks to assist them in their musical development.
