Sandstone Public School Building Roof Stabilization
The grant helped fund the structural repair and in-kind replacement of the historic Sandstone School's roof. In March 2022, an architecture and engineering consultant assessed the roof of the historic Sandstone School. The evaluation determined that the roof was beyond repair and required immediate structural work to prevent collapse. Stabilizing the Sandstone School’s roof was critical to preserving the building by addressing structural vulnerabilities and preventing environmental damage. The roof's stabilization was key to adaptive reuse, allowing the historic school to be transformed into workforce housing. This ensures ongoing maintenance and community investment while preserving its architectural character through historically accurate repairs. The project also addresses community concerns about blight and safety, restoring hope that this 124-year-old landmark will remain a vital part of Sandstone’s identity. By safeguarding its future, the roof stabilization secures both the building’s legacy and its functionality.
