Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

At the concert, several hundred people will have heard a program which will include two exciting works from the standard quartet repertoire and one piece so new that it will not have had its premiere yet! The new work is for a relatively uncommon combination (string quartet plus viola), and the composer will be here to introduce it. A small number of amateur musicians and/or advanced students will have received coaching from a leading European ensemble. Music students at Saint Cloud State University will have heard this group and had an opportunity to discuss relevant matters with them (e.g., careers in music, etc.).We will be able to document the number of people who were reached by this project, as attendees will be counted. Surveys will be used at the concert to determine the audience's opinions about the performance, the repertoire, and how it compared with their expectations; workshop participants will complete a questionnaire regarding the educational value of their experience. We will take photos to document all activities except the formal concert.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Outcomes matched those in our application with one exception: although the music department at Saint Cloud State University had expressed interest in having the Quartet appear at the weekly colloquium, it turned out that there were no classes that day, so we arranged to have the members of the Quartet work with students at Kennedy Community School in St Joseph instead. Outcomes therefore included having our concert audience hear two exciting works from the standard quartet repertoire and a preview performance of a new work written for the Quartet plus violist James Dunham. The composer was in attendance and gave a short but helpful and informative introduction to the new work. At the workshop, local adult amateur musicians received excellent coaching in string quartet playing. And the junior high school students at Kennedy heard the Quartet play and spent some time working with them in small ensembles. Surveys were used to evaluate events, and photos were taken to document the events.
