Residents of the Sherburne, Wright, and Stearns counties who are users of the services offered by Options, inc. will experience increased access to the arts. Removing economic and physical barriers will promote the exploration of artistic interests with fewer obstacles. Individuals with disabilities will be supported to express themselves through the art of painting. The Artist's instruction is geared to address all levels of ability. Individualized attention will encourage self-expression and creativity. Using positive reinforcement, supporting staff will help build confidence. Individuals will be supported to participate in the activity in ways that are meaningful to them, independent of others' talents or skills. Participants will learn about ways to engage cognitively, emotionally, and socially, by tapping into sensory and motor skills. Engagement will be supported based on individual need. For some, this may mean learning to follow instructions to best replicate the painting. For others, it may mean supporting appropriate social interactions during instruction, while for others it may include building motor skills to hold the brush. Participants will learn about the different brushes and techniques taught, resulting in improved artistic skills. The instruction provided will teach the participants about brush sizes and strokes used in painting. They will be taught about the combination of colors that create new colors. They will be taught to position the canvas in particular ways to achieve desired results. This instruction will prepare them to make decisions on how they wish to apply what they have learned. Displaying completed art work in the community will provide a connection with the businesses that display them. In turn, community businesses, and the customers who frequent these establishments, will obtain further knowledge about people of all abilities living and working in their community, potentially creating future artistic opportunities. These changes will promote vibrant inclusive communities in central Minnesota.; There were five outcomes identified in the proposal. They include increased access to the arts; increased self-expression; increased engagement, improved artistic skills, and increased community awareness of the options program. Proposed activities covered in this request will be evaluated by having each participant complete an annual evaluation survey. Because individuals communicate using a variety of modes, staff will assist each person to complete the written survey, interpreting responses for those who have verbal or written communication challenges. Evaluating the proposed outcomes will provide Options' staff to understand if the individuals have learned from the instruction. Results will determine if the instruction has been effective in positively influencing the attitudes and behavior(s) of the individuals. It will take into consideration as to whether or not individuals can transfer learned information into alternative environments, in natural settings, external to the Options' facility. This feedback will allow Options' staff to make adjustments, tailoring future activities to the interests and abilities of the participants. Anecdotal feedback will influence evaluation processes as well. Observation and verbal feedback will be obtained from individuals participating in the day's instruction. This information will also be used to further enhance program services.; Evaluation methods used include the use of an evaluation form completed by each participant at the beginning and the end of the grant period. The evaluation will measure knowledge, attitude, and skills. Anecdotal feedback will also be obtained.
