At the culmination of this project, elementary students will be able: To identify and list orchestra instruments by sight and sound. To identify animals portrayed and their actions as characterized by the different instruments and the different sounds they are able to produce. To create a picture of an animal from the performance. To express in writing what their favorite instrument is and why. To discuss their thoughts, feelings and reactions to the concert event with their teachers. At the culmination of this performance, student performers will be able: To perform Camille Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals" at a high level of proficiency and quality. To join, perform and gain the experience of playing with professional musicians. To discuss their thoughts, feelings and reactions to the concert performance with the director/teacher. With the "String Petting Zoo" activity, students will be able: To seek the opportunity for string instruction and orchestra participation. To learn the proper way to hold and form hands to play a string instrument. To touch, hear and play a string instrument at an introductory level.Invited elementary schools will receive detailed curriculum materials that include student activities for before and after the performance that show measureable results of student learning and comprehension. These packets address all outcomes listed above, including an age appropriate evaluation form for the students, as well as an adult level evaluation for teachers and chaperones. The use of all these materials will be highly encouraged and clear and easy instructions are included with every school packet. Cathedral Youth Orchestra Members performance will be continually measured and evaluated as they practice and rehearse. This evaluation determines what is continually needed to perfect before a successful concert performance. These student members will also receive the opportunity to evaluate their experience and have the opportunity to comment and share their thoughts regarding all aspects of their participation as a group and as individual performers."
