Project Overview

To repair the 1926 Old Settlers' Cabin to make it suitable for historical displays and programming. No historical displays or programming have been housed at the Cabin since the early 1950s. The fair board, along with the Kandiyohi County Historical Society, will use the repaired and enhanced space to display pictures and relics of the county's early history.

Funds will be used to repair the foundation and seal logs. Track lighting and secure display cases will highlight exhibits.

Appropriation Language

These amounts are appropriated to the commissioner of agriculture for grants to county agricultural societies to enhance arts access and education and to preserve and promote Minnesota's history and cultural heritage as embodied in its county fairs. The grants shall be in addition to the aid distributed to county agricultural societies under Minnesota Statutes, section 38.02. The commissioner shall award grants as follows: (2) $700,000 each year for a competitive Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants Program-County Fairs. The commissioner shall award grants for the development or enhancement of county fair facilities or other projects or programs that provide access to the arts, arts education, or agricultural, historical, and cultural heritage programs, including but not limited to agricultural education centers, arts buildings, and performance stages.

90% of survyed visitors would visit the Old Settlers' Cabin in the future to see other historical displays.62% of visitors were not aware of the history fo the Old Settlers' Cabin before their visit.One survey question asked: If you have limited mobility and/or vision, were you able to access and see the display?22% of respondents said they had limited mobility/vision and could access the display.  1% said they could not.  77% stated they did not have limited mobility and/or vision.
