My intention for Wilting Point is to inspire conversations around uncomfortable subjects including addiction/alcoholism, mental health (depression, anxiety and suicide) and the self-doubt and displacement that comes with these challenges. Much of this will be through the use of social media (1200+ collective followers) and email newsletters (250+ subscribers) through a series called 'Behind the Song'. 'Behind the Song' will consist of posts/emails in which I share the lyrics, story and life experiences that have inspired each song, along with how these experiences have affected me emotionally and/or changed my perspective (i.e. loosing a friend to alcoholism, past depression, etc.). During this time I will have a call of action to encourage people to comment/post/respond with their own life interpretations or experiences. I will share the stories/song inspirations during live performances opening the door for conversation and connection after the show. The album inserts will be another opportunity to present the lyrics and share my 'album message', acknowledging these themes that are often hushed or seen as taboo. Wilting Point will bring light to these difficulties and create a sense of community and camaraderie around our personal struggles. I believe by sharing my story I will comfort my audience by letting them know they are not alone and that it is okay to be imperfect, and look to empower others to share their own vulnerability and find the growth that comes with opening up.TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH: The purpose of this grant is to complete the post-production of my second solo album, Wilting Point. My goal is to have an album that will showcase my artistic ability and craft on a professional level. The music industry is full of independent artists and in order to be recognized as a professional, I have to look and sound like a professional. This means I must have high-quality audio packaged in a visually appealing way. This funding will allow me to collaborate with artists that have the ability to achieve the level of quality I am after. MEASURABLE OUTCOMES: Mixing and mastering 8 songs to complete my album Wilting Point. Print 400 physical CDs for national radio campaign distribution and direct sales. Digitally distribute album. Promote my work on my social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.), and also have a 10% increase in activity on these social platforms. Gain insight and improve communication and business skills through collaborations. When all of my gigs were cancelled due to the first COVID-19 lockdown I was forced to re-evaluate my life, prompting me to fully commit to writing/recording my own music. Amidst the challenge I taught myself how to record on a professional recording program and in April 2020 I began recording my debut solo album, Canvas and Color, from my home in Duluth. In June the album was fully recorded, consisting of 8 songs (7 originals/1 cover). I wrote/arranged/performed every instrument on Canvas and Color, including drums, percussion, bass guitar, electric guitar, xylophone, vocals and piano/keyboard. In August, the album was mixed, in Sept. it was mastered and in Nov. 2020 I released Canvas and Color and began a national radio campaign to promote the work. This timeline showcases my level of dedication, organization, and commitment to my craft. In addition, all of the noted collaborators are professionals and known for their expertise and ability to carry out projects in a timely manner.Mix/Master 8 songs will allow me to distribute the album physically/digitally. Sales of the album via digital distribution, website and live shows - goal of $500 in income in first three months.. Track follows/engagements on digital distribution channels (Apple Music, Bandcamp, etc.) - goal of a 10% increase. Track growth in newsletter sign-ups (via live shows, website) - goal of 50 new subscribers. Track success of 'Behind the Song' series through engagement on social media, replies to newsletter and conversations at live shows, even one connection will prove this series worthwhile. Track social media platforms for insight followers - goal 10% increase (Facebook, etc.). Throughout the project I will take notes on the collaborations, reflecting on what is working well and where I need to improve my communication. This insight will be used in future projects. By presenting this vulnerable work I will gain confidence in my unique voice/story, while building rapport with my fans.
