Chronic Wasting Disease and Animal Health
The purpose of the DNR Wildlife Health Program is to monitor wildlife populations for diseases, to provide information to support management decisions based on accurate information, and to minimize negative ecological, recreational, and economic impacts. The ENRTF appropriation was used with other funding sources in FY2012 and FY2013 to: (1) conduct surveillance of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and bovine tuberculosis (bTb) in white-tailed deer, (2) screen hunter-harvested and long-term study moose for diseases and parasites, (3) screen hunter-harvested elk for diseases and parasites, and (4) assess the prevalence of Newcastle’s disease virus in various age classes of double-crested cormorants.
