ACHF Arts Education
8: "Regional residents learn new arts skills and techniques." Through this project we will hope to help our students learn a new art skills and technique while growing to appreciate these new skills and this art form. Students' attitude about their art, their access to art and their own confidence in their artistic abilities will be enhanced through this project. 9: "Regional residents gain awareness and appreciation for a variety of artistic disciplines and mediums." Students will have gained a greater understanding of different artistic processes, specifically in book arts processes through the use of book re-purposing, multi media art design and paper making processes. We also hope that by providing more arts opportunities we will increase the self-esteem of our students -- confidence in themselves, their communication skills, their art work, their ability to present their work in a meaningful way and be on the road to becoming more self-actualized individuals. Students will be given an evaluation tool before beginning this arts program and at the end of the residency after the gallery showing. Goals 8 and 9 are addressed and assessed through this tool as well as outcomes relating to our students confidence in themselves, their art, their relationships with peers and adults. A five point scale will be used. The number will be totaled on the evaluation tool at the beginning of the project and again at the end. If the number is greater at the end of this process and shows growth then we know that our program was successful. The attached evaluation tool is our method of gathering quantitative data on this project and showing our outcomes. Students will also keep a journal throughout this process to show qualitative growth. Students will be encouraged to look back over their journals in preparation for the gallery showing so they are able to strongly communicate their feelings about their work and what it represents.
Students completed a pre-post survey related to their skill level and knowledge about different art skills and techniques. Students also rated themselves on their awareness and appreciation for various artistic disciplines, and their self-confidence with regard to creating art. We are happy to say that all of our students improved by at least one point on every scale from pre to post-survey. Monica helped the students see themselves as artists and gave them the confidence to try something new. You could see the look of self-pride on the students as they followed her instructions to create a new piece of art whether it be a book, paper, or other forms of expressive art.
