Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Our goal is create an engaging and interactive classroom experience that will encourage students to want to study instrumental music when they have an opportunity to join band or orchestra classes in the 5th grade. These are measurable outcomes: ? Students will understand and experience music as a form of personal and artistic expression. ? Students will understand that music connects people across cultures and time periods. ? Students will seriously consider the study of instrumental music. We will judge student engagement through direct observation of the students during the class, and through a questionnaire that teachers will fill out as they observe the class. During the last five minutes of the class, we will ask students two or three simple questions, and have them write down or draw their responses. When we leave the classroom, we will have the teacher and student surveys and will review them to see if the outcomes are being met, or if adjustments need to be made to the lesson plan to achieve them.

Measurable Outcome(s)

These were the goals for the school visits: 1. Students will understand and experience music as a form of personal and artistic expressions. 2. Students will understand that music connects people across cultures and time periods. 3. Students will seriously consider the study of instrumental music. We were able to visit schools in Ely and Babbitt in late January, 2020, and schools in Eveleth/Gilbert and Virginia in April, 2022. Although the program in 2022 was different from the 2020 lesson plan, the goals remained the same. Both programs were designed to allow young students to see instrumental performances up close, and hear music from MSO's April concert series performed. We distributed free student tickets and encouraged them to attend the full orchestra's performance. We asked students to respond in writing to a few questions which were designed to engage kids in thinking about their own interest in learning to play a musical instrument.
