Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The primary goal of this program is to provide children of diverse, urban backgrounds with art programming and education that would normally be unattainable, connect children with local artists and area art projects, and deepen the love and appreciation of the arts among the children and their families. Although there are a variety of art and nature programs throughout the city during the summer months, this population of children does not have access to those programs for a variety of socio-economic reasons including poverty and lack of transportation. Many of the programs available do not include working artists that represent the Native American and African American communities, and the resources that are available are often limited to a day or short periods of time, often "one and done". This program will provide consistent, ongoing education throughout the summer with the goal of including the Damiano Center community and their families. We will know we have accomplished this objective through: 1. Attendance and retention of children throughout the summer as well as growth and interest in the art program over the course of the program 2. Feedback from the students and their families 3. Feedback from the larger Damiano community of guests, staff, volunteers, and staff. A survey will be conducted of all participants, visiting artists, families and volunteers. As this is a close tight-knit community, we will know we have succeeded by seeing our numbers increase through "word of mouth", feedback from the visitors of the Damiano Center spontaneously sharing their comments, and through conversations with the students and their families.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Our primary goals were to address basic principles of drawing and painting (color, composition, perspective, line, mass, and shape) as well as science of art (how we see) and history of art across cultures and geography. Over the course of 11 weeks, we created over 20 projects that touched on materials, the history and progression of painting, color theory, and design as well as developing drawing skills by observing nature. Mediums included watercolor, ink, acrylic, collage, tempera, pencil, and charcoal. While the focus of the program was centered around art and art education, we found that the participants also learned skills of tenacity, deliberate practice, artistic expression, teamwork, the value in trying new things, ability to follow instruction, willingness to experiment, and that it's ok to make mistakes and try again. As proposed we were able to have guest instructors, participate in a community mural project, and share our work in a community art show at Steve O'Neil.
