ACHF Arts Education
This project aims to engage community members and Proctor High School and CSS students in exploring arts learning experiences. Specific short-term outcomes include: 1. At least 30 Proctor High School students, 50 CSS students, and 50 community members will participate in the artist lectures in March of 2020. 2. At least 30 Proctor High School students will work with Deal one-on-one in March to further explore their identity through individual paintings. 3. At least twenty CSS students will attend the class ?Art and Protest? guest lecture taught by Deal. In the long term, this Mural Project will continue increasing access to, and interest in, making art to a wider range of our community as a means of enriching and empowering individuals' experiences and honoring their stories. Several assessment strategies will be used. Participation and attendance numbers will be tracked, and all participants will complete pre- post- and final surveys including both open-ended and quantitative questions. (What do you know about mural creation? What is your interest in public art? Is this experience encouraging you to want to participate in future community art projects'). Secondly, after securing parent approval, we will invite a videographer to observe and record portions of the Deal's lectures, and his creative process with students during phase two of this project. When appropriate, the videographer will conduct informal interviews with Proctor High School, Deal, and CSS participants. Finally, Brokke Erickson will observe the learning that occurs throughout the process and participant engagement with the lectures and interactive portions. A written summary of project outcomes will be included in a final report to ARAC.
In February of 2020, Gregg Deal visited Proctor High School, where he gave several artist lectures on intersections of identity and activism and worked on an individual piece in collaboration with the students. That piece is now permanently installed in Proctor High School. During Deal's time at CSS, he lectured twice to students (two groups of approximately 16 students), focusing on appropriation, design, and identity, he visited informally with students, and then gave a well-attended artist lecture in the evening that was open to the public. We felt so fortunate to be able to have him. In addition, Assistant Professor and Teaching Artist, Paul LaJeunesse, worked with students and the community to design and execute a piece also to be installed at Proctor High School. Over 100 students and community members worked collaboratively on that piece. Due to Covid restrictions, the piece won't be installed until later this Spring.
