To increase access to high quality arts learning for low-income students by deepening school-day experiences through distinct out-of-school learning. Increased access to arts learning is measured through daily program attendance, documenting active participation in arts learning activities, and enrollment forms, documenting student demographics to ensure increased access of the target population. 2: To improve skill building in visual arts, music and dance, as defined by the state arts standards, for 450 low-income students and 75 staff members. Improved skill building is measured through an arts rubric tool, adapted by the teaching artist and aligned the state arts standards. Each arts learner will describe learning through journaling writing or sketching to reflect on skill building.
YMCA Beacons made arts learning opportunities more accessible to students by collaborating with local artists to offer a wide array of free arts programming; Afro-American Dance, violin, beat-boxing, African drumming, water color, environmental art and music production were offered to more than 450 young people. We utilized our partners to offer programing through intensive summer arts camp, afterschool and school day opportunities. Transportation and meals were provided mitigating barriers to participation. To ensure target population criteria was met we used an online tracking system and enrollment forms enabling program staff to track demographic and income status data. Program attendance was taken daily to ensure increased access and participation. Photos and videos were taken to document active participation in arts learning activities, deepening young peoples experiences with the arts. We evaluated our achieved outcomes through quantitative and qualitative data collected. 2: The quantity and types of arts learning opportunities within our organization increased and improved skill building in visual arts, music and dance music by incorporating a variety of high quality arts learning experience into already defined programs. Engagement strategies included but were not limited to: field trips to local art studios, violin lessons, music-production instruction and textile arts. Arts-learning instruction enhanced and diversified programming at both the Sheridan Beacons Center, Sheridan Arts Magnet and the North Community YMCA. Programming was offered year round to ensure increased access and participation. In order to reinforce learning we engaged in active reflection and feedback sessions. During the Summer Arts Camp young people had the opportunity to journal, sketch and record video journals to document their growth and understanding. To ensure quality, artists created a skill building measuring tool for each student to track learning that took place.
