SteppingStone Theatre will expand its curriculum-based residency programs in four schools, connecting students with professional artists, supporting student-driven creativity and collaboration, and enhancing learning in other academic content areas.

SteppingStone Theatre will increase the scope of its residencies beyond current programming, engaging more Minnesotans in arts learning opportunities. SteppingStone Theatre will track the number of student participants it reaches and the number of contact hours it offers as part of the residency activities in this project, and will use historical data to compare and measure any increase. 2: SteppingStone Theatre will reach underserved populations and address learning challenges that have previously created barriers to participation. SteppingStone Theatre is working with underserved populations and schools with specific curriculum needs that have been barriers for access to arts learning. We will track student demographics and survey educators before, during and after the residency.
We definitely increased the scope of residencies. In the same time period in FY12, SteppingStone Theatre reached 613 students at these same sites. By increasing programming and working more comprehensively, we were able to engage 909 more students, an increase of 148%. We know this by tracking participation rates in our database and comparing historic date from within the same span of months. 2: The schools that we worked in for this project each face unique challenges, from the 98% of free/reduced lunch eligible students at Lucy Craft Laney Elementary, to the brand-new middle school that is still finding its way, Ramsey Middle School in Minneapolis. Each school partner was selected because school staff wanted to offer students arts experiences that would be otherwise unavailable, and because SteppingStone Theatre was interested in custom-designing programs to meet school needs. At each school, program leaders were grateful for programs that really could not have happened without this funding.
