Involve more youth from North Minneapolis in theater programming in non-school hours. Teaching artists will maintain rosters of youth participants and logs of youth demographics and participation. 2: Provide a quality arts education to help youth discover and develop creative skills and talents in all aspects of theater under the tutelage and mentorship of professional artists. Teaching artist evaluation of program/artistic growth of youth participants; youth evaluation of program/artistic growth; review/assessment/adjustment by artistic committee; monitoring by management staff, board of directors and board committees.
Through Capri Afterschool Theater program we have been able to achieve this goal, having found creative ways to overcome common recruitment and retention barriers for urban youth. Our best prospects for Capri Afterschool Theater are Plymouth Youth Center high school students - so we have integrated Capri Afterschool Theater teaching artists Kevin West and Greta Oglesby into Plymouth Youth Center's school day high school schedule through residencies and workshops, which have proven to be successful in attracting more students to Capri Afterschool Theater after school. To evaluate progress on this goal, Capri Afterschool Theater teaching artists kept logs on student participation, and solicit student feedback frequently. 2: Capri Afterschool Theater curriculum is aligned with state standards and students reported gaining new life skills and growing their artistic talents. Capri Afterschool Theater-Children's Theatre Company collaboration expanded students' horizons. They attended Children's Theatre Company tech rehearsals and met Children's Theatre Company artistic teams. Students also developed artistically Summer 2013 when the high schoolers collaborated with Camp Capri middle schoolers to stage two public shows of Courage of Nine in August. This play by Cheryl L. West is a fictionalized account of the nine high school students at the heart of the 1957 desegregation struggles in Little Rock, Arkansas. Both shows drew rave audience reviews. Evaluation tools included weekly program meetings between teaching artists and Capri theater director, class observations, student and parent feedback, and audience reports.
