1200 neighborhood residents facing multiple barriers to participation will express themselves creatively and increase interest in arts participation. Evaluation tools include (pre-post) surveys and observations in the 7Cs rubric (character, confidence, competence, connection, compassion, creativity and contribution) as well as systematically gathering demographic data and participation levels.
Pillsbury House Theatre resident teaching artists developed curricula to lower barriers to participation by weaving arts learning experiences into Pillsbury House Neighborhood Center social service programs; residencies with Washburn and South High Schools, Green Central Middle School and the Epsilon Program; and community events and gatherings in four Minneapolis neighborhoods that intersect at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue. Through their efforts 307 young people ages 16 months to 23 years received regular, sustained arts creation, experience and performance opportunities; 203 adults participated in multiple arts workshops; and 756 community members engaged in an arts workshop in a familiar setting. Results were evaluated through: tracking attendance and demographics, pre-post staff observations of youth, in-event surveys, focus groups and interviews. Evaluation data documents increases in research based markers of positive youth development, attachment to community, and creativity and collaboration.
