Arts Learning
ACHF Arts Education
With classroom residencies, students will meet selected Minnesota arts (theater, music) and national health education standards (mental health). Digital portfolios of student work (creating/performing/responding to puppetry and music, expressing ideas and feelings about calm) will be scored on a high/medium/low rubric against a checklist of Minnesota Arts and National Health Education standards. 2: In workshops and performances, Moreland's teachers, students, and families will demonstrate shared language and creative tools to address stress. Guided discussion and written, visual and verbal reflection will assess how participants use and anticipate using the characters, metaphors, music, story and mindfulness techniques to address stress in their own lives.
In classroom residencies, K-1 students will meet Minnesota Arts and Health standards. Students will access more arts learning opportunities that they otherwise would not be able to due to socioeconomic status. Students participated in activities such as yoga, singing and song writing, pole puppet making, monkey mask art, performances, theater and movement activities connected to the island of calm. Students are evaluated through student performances and also reflected on these performances. Student assessment sheets were used to determine any shifts in awareness, skill, and practice of the activities learned. Surveys were given to families, teachers, and students. These surveys were used to make adjustments to activities and performances. An outside evaluation was done on the program as well. 2: In workshops and performances, Moreland teachers, students, and families will demonstrate shared language and creative tools to address stress and mental health through the use of engaging art activities. Teacher participated in workshops to learn common language/tools and create art/movement activities to help students manage stress. Students participated in the residency with Zpuppets to learn about the island of calm and other common language to help cope with stress. Families were invited to workshops to learn the same basic information as teachers and students as well as create art/movement to go along with these skills. Zpuppets performed for the entire school and share the common language of Monkey Mind Pirates with students, staff, and family members. Surveys were given to families, teachers, and students. These surveys evaluated any shifts in awareness in language when managing stress. Teacher focus groups were also used to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
