Arts Learning
ACHF Arts Education
The quantity and types of arts learning opportunities in the state, and the organizations or venues that offer them increases. Arts learning opportunities are more accessible to Minnesota because barriers to participation have been identified and mitigated.
Artists Tish Jones, Terrell Woods (aka "Carnage") and Desdamona taught an elective in spoken word and music production to 57 Plymouth Christian Youth Center students over three quarters and one summer session. They worked with Plymouth Christian Youth Center teaching staff to ensure the course fit within English requirements and earned students credit towards graduation. Students focused on the history of black arts leading to the development of hip hop, created art on themes they had chosen, and presented their work at a quarterly Arts Extravaganza. They learned artistic skills and also mastered life skills such as planning, time management, and teamwork. Evaluation: Tools used to evaluate achievement of objectives included (1) total number of students participating; (2) number of credits youth earned towards graduation; (3) alignment of course content with Minnesota graduation standard; and (4) youth evaluation of and satisfaction with the program, and indication of personal and academic growth.
