We will give youth the foundation and skills to feel confident in their ability to learn something new and to create and mend things with their own hands. Additionally, by encouraging a trusted adult to attend the machine sewing classes with their child, we aim to create space for adult/child pairs to discover a hobby they might share. The class is an accessible way to also teach adults how to use a sewing machine, with the two-pronged goal that the adult will be better able to foster the child's continued learning and use of their new sewing skills AND that the adult might discover sewing as a hobby they wish to pursue. The hand sewing component of this project will build in younger elementary school students the foundational skills for improved literacy, hand-eye coordination, mindfulness, and learning tactics. The most quantitative measure for success will be how many students complete the projects within the class time. This will speak to good planning on our end and the capacity to learn on the students' end. We will send follow-up surveys two weeks and each month after each class gathering information on how many students were able to partake in any additional sewing projects outside of a facilitated learning environment. Other goals will be seen to fruition through a more rounded and holistic approach to our youth as responsible and engaged citizens. We are one block of a patchwork quilt contributing to their growth as humans and community members. We plan to continue engaging youth through both age-specific classes, intergenerational classes, and community events offered within our programming.
