Sixth through twelfth grade students will develop skills in screenwriting, acting, filming, and editing for short films and comedic video. Students will assess their skill level at the start and end of the project and provide structured daily feedback. They will journal what they learned while creating the short film or comedic video. Artist mentors will observe student learning. 2: Student teams will produce a short film or comedic video as a way to increase understanding and build a sense of community with each other. Students will provide structured feedback after group meetings. Post-project interviews with learners will include questions on how the process of creating and sharing a film changed their perception of themselves and others.
Secondary students learned key film skills and produced four films. Students completed pre and post-surveys, verbally shared what they learned. Mentors noted significant skill improvement, especially from those who had never made a film before. 2: Student sharing of films increased understanding and empathy of the student experience. Students provided feedback after every meeting. Students shared in exit interviews that learning about each other and working as a team were the best parts of the process.
