MacPhail will partner with Ebenezer Minneapolis, a residential campus for low-income seniors, and Lyngblomsten's respite care program for seniors with memory loss and their caregivers, to expand access to music programming at eleven Twin Cities sites.

MacPhail Music for Life will build relationships with Ebenezer Minneapolis to serve low-income seniors and with Lyngblomsten to serve seniors with memory loss and their caregivers. MacPhail will survey and conduct interviews with program staff and conduct surveys of program participants at beginning, mid-point and end of project (January 1 to December 31, 2013). 2: MacPhail Music for Life will identify and address the lack of music programming for low-income seniors and seniors with memory loss and their caregivers. MacPhail will document attendance of 500 program participants at 11 sites in the Twin Cities for their residence and will survey program participants for musical mastery and social benefits of music-making.
Through partnership with Ebenezer, an organization serving low-income seniors and Lyngblomsten's The Gathering, a program serving seniors with memory loss, MacPhail is building relationships with organizations that serve groups that have traditionally been underserved. MacPhail and its partner organizations have worked together to identify and address barriers to participation, largely by delivering programs at locations where seniors live and gather. Thanks to this grant MacPhail established a new relationship with The Gathering, a volunteer led respite care program for seniors with early- to mid-stage memory loss. This new relationship expanded arts programming to 100 seniors with memory loss and 270 volunteers, many of whom are also over the age of 55. In addition, MacPhail deepened its relationship with Ebenezer Ridges, serving 91 seniors and 35 preschool aged children in an intergenerational participatory music making program. 2: MacPhail and its partner organizations identified the following barriers to participation for seniors with memory loss or low-income: transportation, finances, geography, and accessibility. In collaboration with Ebenezer and Lyngblomsten's The Gathering program, MacPhail delivered the MacPhail Music for Life program to low-income seniors and seniors with memory loss. Prior to partnership with MacPhail, neither organization offered a participatory music making experience for seniors as part of typical programming. In order to eliminate these barriers, MacPhail delivered participatory music making programs at six Gathering locations throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and at two Ebenezer locations: Minneapolis and Ridges in Burnsville. Through this grant, all activities for free to program participants.
