In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, in partnership with Waite House, Little Earth, and Hope Community, will conduct an eleven-month program for at-risk Phillips neighborhood youth who have limited access to arts programs.

At-risk and underserved youth receive out-of-school access to quality arts education at partner neighborhood sites. Heart of the Beast in partnership with neighborhood sites will deliver an 11 month of art programs tailored to meet the needs of neighborhood youth, including pre and post assessment of learning. 2: Students will use the arts to explore the cultural landscape, history, and sense of place in their neighborhood. The evaluation will draw from the following data and sources: Numbers of children participating at each site, feedback from community partner personnel, feedback from artists, and feedback from youth involved via documentary processes.
At-risk and underserved youth receive quality out of school arts programming at partner neighborhood sites over 11 months. The Program provided participants with: 1. in-depth experience in puppet/mask performance. 2. Learning and practice of creative problem solving. 3. Development creative self-expression. 4. Increased skills in teamwork and cooperative decision-making. 5. Understanding of the history and diverse cultures within the Phillips community. Evaluation mechanisms included oral interview pre and post learning assessments of program activities and particular site elements, interviews with families at public events and site staff on a monthly basis, and an outside evaluator for the program. 2: Students used the arts to explore the cultural landscape, history and sense of place of their neighborhood. In support of that goal: Each group traveled to the other program sites and participated in cross-cultural exchanges that included 1) youth and family members performing with puppets in the Heart of the Beast annual May Day Parade held May 2013, 2) the creation of an oral history documentary by youth of their community which was shown on the outer back wall of In the Heart of the Beast Theater at a bike-in movie night, 3) making site specific cultural identity puppets that were presented at a family gathering and 4) the creation of the (temporary) Phillips History Museum consisting of ten interactive history activities that researched the Phillips neighborhood.
