Project Details

Laidlaw will hold an exhibition of recent ceramic art in a Mankato gallery, showcasing work that focuses on the relationship between Japanese ceramics and the art of ikebana.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The artist will engage Greater Mankato community to discuss Japanese ceramics and art of Ikebana through presenting ceramic flower vessels. An exhibition of artwork with reception and lecture will be presented to the public. The presentation will focus on the development of Japanese ceramics and its relationship to art of Ikebana. 2: The artist will research to deepen the knowledge of Ikebana, traditional Japanese flower arrangement, then create a new body of ceramic vessels. At the end of project period, I will have a new body of work to share the impact of this grant. The evidence on progress should include results of new glaze testing, signs of exploration on forms, and investigation on various firing methods.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The artist engaged community members of various backgrounds to discuss Japanese ceramics and art of Ikebana through presenting ceramic flower vessels. Artist lecture and workshops were presented to the public via webinar and Zoom meetings. The presentation focused on the development of Japanese ceramics and its relationship to art of Ikebana. 2: The artist researched to deepen the knowledge on Ikebana, traditional Japanese flower arrangement, then created a new body of ceramic vessels. I created seventeen vessels by the end of this project. There is an evidence of progress in my skill and concept in each work I created. There is a log book of all firings and glaze testing from the grant's period.
