Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

To become proficient in using composing software to create and arrange music, which will expand and develop my artistic abilities as a musician. I will know that my desired outcome has been successfully attained when I use the composing software to compose two new pieces of music and when I notate twenty pieces of music from past compositions. 2: Create a prototype book of 20 compositions to be used by musicians and hold a workshop on composing to engage the public and other artists. I will consult with other musicians on my book of compositions about how to use it as a learning tool. The demonstration and workshop on my creative process in composing will have opportunities to engage with musicians in the audience.

Measurable Outcome(s)

In my estimation, this grant has been a complete success. I have learned new skills to help me in my artistic process — abilities that a year ago I never thought I could accomplish. It took a lot of hard work and many hours, but I believe that I’ve put myself on track to continue developing and advancing these new skills. I am well on my way to using the Finale software to aid in my composing, and I am becoming a better artist on the keyboard. I’m also seeing the results of my work through the students that I teach and the music that I now have available to whoever would like access to it. The whole process has been very rewarding. 2: During my grant period, I was commissioned by a music professor at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato to write a piece of music for his college orchestra. We worked on the arrangement together. And since we both used Final software, we were able to communicate our ideas and hear our progress on the piece, even though we were in different parts of the state. This opened my eyes to the many possibilities that exist for me to share and work on music with others, not only from Minnesota, but globally. I am currently working on two projects that, when completed, will be published and available to the public.
