Outcome #11: "Regional residents build connections to their own and others' cultural heritage through regional arts and cultural events and/or activities." One goal of this project will be to create a more cohesive design, particularly for traditional abstract and floral patterns, by creating six digital design elements to be used as patterns in traditional art medium and also as a basis for new digital medium (i.e. digital patterns for fabric for quilts/cradleboards, digital animations, etc). A second goal will be to explore Dakota art methodology to create digital pieces (video, animation, etc) that will engage with traditional Dakota art. In my practice, I generally consult and request feedback from two elder/mentors that I have apprenticed under, as well as three peers that have been formative in my traditional arts practice. I plan to engage with these colleagues during the grant period, both in discussing the methodological underpinnings of Dakota art, in exploring my own practice and design, and in feedback on created digital work. I will be journaling and documenting my own progress and practice through the use of a creative ?bullet-journal,? which is already a part of my creative and personal practice.
The grant had a huge impact on my ability to create and generate Dakota floral designs, providing a leap forward in my functional career as an artist. With the digital components and tools alone, the amount of time required to design and properly size floral imaging for beadwork and quillwork was cut down by almost 90%. Not only do I have a small library of floral images available for future projects, but I can create multiple iterations of a project to apply to other works and medium. I have been able to devote more time and energy to new applications of my work and spend a time developing new methods and digital art mediums, including a public art mural, works featured in the ?Indigenous Motherhood and Matriarchy? exhibit at Art Commons in Calgary, and invitations to submit exhibits on national-stage.
