I want, need, to play with new people in the interest of learning from them. Whether it's a different philosophical approach, or different methods of fingering or bowing, it will be totally new information. As a (retired) teacher, I am very adept at absorbing new information and putting it to use in my own circumstances. I love to learn, and expect that this project will teach me much about playing and more about music itself. A little more specific is my desire to learn how to teach/coach people to help them improve their skills on string instruments. This would be of most value in classic chamber ensembles. Conversely, teaching something is the best way to learn it; the benefits here are obvious. Short-term success will sound like feedback from the instructors at the workshop, and noticeable-even-to-me improvements in my playing. It will look like my enthusiasm and inspiration for playing hitting new highs. Longer term, it will look like me seeking out chances to play in actual chamber groups, perhaps on cello as well as bass. It will look like me stepping out of my usual ?shut up and play? mode into more of a coach/leader role.
