The 1920s: A Decade of Change in Murray County (Phase II, Exhibit Implementation)
This new exhibit provides the opportunity to display artifacts previously housed in storage and enables the museum to highlight new aspects of Murray County's history. One example is the (partial) distillery still they already have in their collection. This is an ideal way to bring this item forward and display it prominently. This artifact is sure to elicit a lot of interest in the interpretation of Prohibition in the county.
This project will have a lasting impact by educating people about the 1920s and the social, political, economic, and cultural changes that occurred during this decade. Since the exhibit will run for a minimum of 2 years, many people will have the opportunity to learn about this time period and how it impacted Murray County. It will also help people draw connections between events of one hundred years ago and today. Museum visitors will be challenged to consider current events in light of the past and to develop a heightened understanding of the present through a consideration of historical context. Since this exhibit focuses on little-known or poorly understood segments of history such as the KKK in Murray County and Prohibition visitors are seeing new perspectives.
It will also help people draw connections between events of one hundred years ago and today. Museum visitors will be challenged to consider current events in light of the past and to develop a heightened understanding of the present through a consideration of historical context.
Finally, the research already conducted for this project has produced tangible information and records that will be kept permanently in the museum archives. This information will be of value to the entire community, and particularly to future researchers and historians working on local history projects.
