Project Overview

This project is for the Duluth Streams Urban Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS). The project is a core part of the WRAPS and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) development for the Duluth Metropolitan Area (DMA).

The DMA is unique in that it is dissected by high quality, cold-water streams that drain into Lake Superior. There are very few urban areas in the United States that even approach the DMA when it comes to the density and quality of streams that drain the urban area. This combination of factors, along with semi-mountainous terrain, make the management of water a unique challenge in this part of Minnesota. The fact that these streams also discharge to one of the most important freshwater lakes in world also complicates watershed management.
