Digitization of the Whipple American Indian Collection
This project involved continued acquisition of culturally and historically significant artifacts from the Whipple American Indian Collection. In addition, museum staff began digitizing both the Science Museum and Minnesota Historical Society's collections associated with Bishop Henry Whipple, performing detailed research on individual objects which aided in cataloging objects in a new database, and garnering dtaa from digitizations, consultations, oral histories, and research to present in a new web-based resource for sharing information about objects from Bishop Whipple Collections.
The website www.inhonorofthepeople.org was created to allow institutions and individuals to upload, document and virtually assemble all of the known objects associated with the Bishop. While the majority of American Indian objects in this collection are held at the Science Museum and Minnesota Historical Society, cultural objects and archives are located at other various museums, historical societies, churches and private collections across the nation. The website allows sharing of information regardless of physical location of the object.
