Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Perceived or real barriers to participation are addressed. Partnerships are developed between social service organizations and arts organizations to better serve underserved communities. Social or human service organizations use arts to help achieve their service goals.

Measurable Outcome(s)

We know adults experiencing homelessness continue to struggle with many issues. Among these issues are mental illness, chronic health conditions, cognitive disabilities, and traumatic brain injury. Those who face these issues often cannot find safe places to create, learn about art and explore personal creativity. Many lacked self-esteem, and feared being stigmatized because of the combination of their current living situation and the illness issues with which they are faced. Many never had a chance to explore their artistic abilities because they felt intimidated or overwhelmed in formal classroom settings. As we planned the classroom activities, we also created and used a series of written inventories, before and after each series of classes. We also engaged participants in individual and group conversations, to discern their progress. We saw these barriers lessen, as they became engaged in a variety of high quality arts activities led by professional artist/teachers this year. 2: We partnered with ArtiCulture because of their successful programming for people with a variety of mental and physical health challenges, their belief that art should be accessible to all, and their dedication to inspiring social change through art. These values align well with the mission of Our Saviour’s Community Services; to increase skills and improve lives. Our Saviour’s Housing’s programs are increasingly focused on the whole person. While housing and re-housing is our primary mission, we know residents have the best opportunity for success when they live in a community where all aspects of their lives are enhanced. Prior to receiving this grant, our organizations had not worked together, although we are located in the same neighborhood. Through engagement with this program, we developed a strong partnership, and are better able to serve underserved communities. This partnership was enhanced by regular communication, in the form of meetings and electronic communications.
