The Fort Project will introduce an object that can be occupied and can be re-created by members of my audience. This project will expand my tools for sharing research in a kinetic experience. I will be able to evaluate my object making skills by constructing the fort several times and in different contexts. I will also maintain a blog that will stay active and where others will post images of the forts they build across the state using the easy instructions I make. 2: The Fort Project will occur in both a gallery and my backyard in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis, expanding the range of Minnesotans who get to participate. I will archive each event that occurs in the fort with both photographs and video which I will post on my blog. I will also use different forms of advertisement for each event like posting to the Seward neighborhood e-democracy page for neighborhood events and using social networking for gallery events.
This was my first sculpture that was built to reside in the public. I learned a lot about public art, permitting, public space, the speed at which a city works, how the city views public art, and liability. All hard and frustrating things to learn but good lessons for future work. 2: I was very interested in make this piece exists in the public sphere and not in a gallery or on the property of an art institution. There were many times with the struggle to build in the public that I wanted to go back on this idea but I did not. I am very excited that the treehouse lives at Silverwood Park and is open/free to the public to engage with.
