By apprenticing with a master artist, Keltgen will obtain the skills to play the concertina reflective of German, Bohemian, and Czechoslovakian styles. Evaluation will be completed by the master artist throughout and at the end of the program to evaluate the performance of the apprentice. The apprentice will also complete a self-assessment to evaluate if the outcome was achieved. 2: The private instruction and public performances provided by the project will provide exposure to ethnic music to multiple communities in Minnesota. The project coordinator will keep records of the public performances. Success will be measured by audience reaction and requests for future performances based upon the success of the public performances.
The apprentice, Kris Keltgen, learned many of the subtle methods by which to improve performance ability and technique in playing the concertina from the Master Artist, Karl Hartwich. These technique included musical dynamics, chord structure, and various fingerings used in many of the ethnic musical styles performed on the concertina. Due to decreasing numbers of professional concertina players playing the traditional ethnic music, it was important for the apprentice to learn these techniques directly from the Master Artist. With further study and practice, the apprentice should be able to pass these learnings onto others in an effort to keep the traditional music styles and instrumental techniques alive for future generations. 2: The apprentice, Kris Keltgen, and master artist, Karl Hartwich, performed together five times in the State of Minnesota as part of the grant application requirements. It is estimated that as many as 3,150 people enjoyed these public performances. Public reaction was very enthusiastically received at each of these performances. Two especially noteworthy public performances occurred on August 26-27 when Kris and Karl performed at the Minnesota State Fair. It should also be noted that on August 8, 2013, Kris and Karl performed for 1,600 people at the Medina Ballroom in Medina, Minnesota as part of a television taping for RFD-TV network which (has been) and will continue to be broadcast on National Television. The RFD-TV network has an audience of 61 million viewers nationwide.
