Through my project, I intend to improve my woodworking skills. I will use the finger joint method of joining to construct strong, square joints. I will use a woodworking tool called a try square to evaluate the right angle of each joint. Success of the strength component will be determined by whether or not the sculpture supports itself. 2: Through this project, I intend to share my work with a large and diverse group of Minnesotans, many of whom I have not interacted with in the past. I will evaluate this outcome by being present during the three-day exhibition of this project, where I will converse with visitors and keep a running tally of new interactions.
Through my project I intended to improve my woodworking skills, focusing specifically on the finger-joint method of joining. Over the course of the project I constructed finger-joints in a variety of ways, first using a router table, and then a table saw with a dado blade set. Both approaches resulted in strong, clean, and square joints. I learned how to construct a number of finger joint jigs and used them to produce the wooden sound-chambers in my project. I used a try square to evaluate the right angle of each joint and was very successful at constructing strong, clean and square joints. The joints fully support the weight of the sculpture and withstand the movement and stress associated with their use. 2: Through my project I intended to share my work with a large and diverse group of Minnesotans. I exhibited my project in an artist-run gallery in the Northrup King Building during Art-Attack and had over one-hundred conversations with excited individuals during the 3-day event. I kept a running tally of visitors and interactions during the event. While I did have more face-to-face interactions with Minnesotans than ever before, there were not nearly as many visitors as expected. The variance is highlighted in the Scope/Impact section of this report.
