Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

It is expected that the measureable outcomes will include for each child the ability to read orally a variety of different pieces of children’s literature with a new confidence. They now will be able to stand in front of their classmates without any hesitation and orally express themselves in a new way. In reading orally they will also be able to use different levels of their voices to show feelings about what they are orally reading. Another useful new talent will be in showing different levels of facial expressions as they read. Please keep in mind that oral expression training usually does not take place until high school in speech classes. For second grade students to now have a chance to be introduced to oral reading training is unique and special.By the end of this two week residency children will be able to read at least two pieces of children’s literature orally with a variety of voice expressions. They will show different types of body expression to show feelings about what they will be reading. Also, in orally reading in small groups they will be working as a team to bring a piece alive. This project will give each child a chance to draw upon two to three different ways to express themselves orally. In the final program they will draw upon two of these methods.

Measurable Outcome(s)

In this residency the second grade students over a two week period learned about world of Readers Theater. The climax of the residency was the oral reading by each child on the last day of the residency. The children read from scripts from a number of pieces of children’s literature. Some of the children read their pieces individually and at other times it was a short script from a poem or story. It was during these oral readings that each teacher kept a record of how each child read their script with voice differences, a variety of facial expressions and different body movements. While the two week residency was not a long time to incorporate all of these areas in an excellent way the children all displayed a good fundamental understanding of what Readers Theater was all about. The chance to do oral readings while their parents were present added so much to the final day and was a good motivation for them as they so much wanted to please them. Each child at this closing event read from two pieces of literature. Also present were at least two other classes of second graders to hear the readings of their classmates.
