The outcomes for this AIR would be: A core group of 25 Students will experience designing, under painting and finishing a painting on a larger scale. 12 art club students will be able to critique their portfolios by appointment with Mr. McCoy. A large mural will be completed in our café over the course of two weeks, in front of 500 students and 70 staff members, immersing them briefly in the creative process. The high school art curriculum will include mural painting as a community service curriculum component, with a goal of creating temporary murals on campus in the future. Robert McCoy will share his design perspective at a faculty meeting for 30 staff members, and go more in depth about his process with a professional learning community comprised of design teachers at Foley High School. The artist, residency, and mural will be featured in Foley High School’s social media campaign and at an opening reception for the community.A plus, check, minus rubric will be used to evaluate each of the components of the residency. A plus would indicate a positive experience, a minus would indicate an ineffective use of time, and a check would indicate a mildly beneficial experience for the participant. The core 25 painting students will complete a form, the 12 art club students receiving critiques will complete a form, and the professional learning community will complete a form. There will be room for additional comments on each assessment. This data, combined with an exit interview with Mr. McCoy will help us design more effective residencies in the future.
Students created a mural with the guidance or artist Robert McCoy. Students watched the mural as it developed, and gave input that was incorporated in the design. Teacher Mike Carlson developed a framework for guiding students and patrons through the process of selecting a space for and designing a mural. Mr. McCoy presented selected public designs to the Foley Public School staff and met with staff members individually to guide them on next steps as they consider livening their spaces with art. Several staff members have contacted the high school art department and are in line for receiving student generated murals for their spaces. A reception was held at Foley High School for artist Robert McCoy where the community could see the mural and talk with Mr. McCoy about the design.
