Arts and Culture Program Exhibited
The program is specifically designed to support the cultural advancement of the African-American community in this area. Historically, this community has faced systemic disadvantages that have impacted its cultural vitality. By identifying, supporting, and strengthening various aspects of African-American culture, this program aims to preserve and protect the community's rich heritage. The African-American church, a longstanding symbol of unity and preservation, will serve as a key venue for these activities, providing an ideal location for these community events.
Key cultural and artistic activities will include African American history meetings, stepping classes, concerts, musical performances, spoken word events, and the creation of community murals. These activities have been selected to preserve important dance, music, and visual arts cultural traditions. The historic celebrations will incorporate community members and organizations led by African-American leaders who are respected within the community. Notable historians from the African American community will be invited to share history lessons and stories with youth and conduct activities that incorporate fun and learning. Vendors will be invited to specific events to connect audiences with traditional African American cuisine and entrepreneurship. The program will partner with "Step with Soul," an organization that has served the African-American and BIPOC community and its youth for over a decade, teaching them about the art of step-dancing. Poetry events such as poetry training and an open mic night will be provided for youth, such as teens and preteens who are interested in the art. A mural targeting youth will be painted as an expression of art and African American historical culture.
Musicians, and singers will be engaged to foster a sense of community through cultural expression. Culturally relevant rap concerts will be held for youth throughout the year. The Music Director will also be conducting choir lessons for teens and preteens who are interested.
A Director of Arts and Culture and a Director of Music will be appointed to plan events and coordinate activities that benefit the entire community. These Directors will act as liaisons, supporting and building upon the cultural foundations of African-Americans in the Eastside of Saint Paul. The Music Director will focus on concerts and music-related activities, whereas the Director of Cultural Arts will work on the other cultural activities. Also, a marketing assistance will be utilized to carry out monthly marketing services on social media and even print products for Proceed.
The strength of a community lies in its ability to express itself despite challenges. This project aims to provide healthy outlets for expression within the African-American community, supporting growth and cultural well-being.
$97,500 the second year is for a grant to PROCEED, Inc., for arts, cultural, and environmental preservation work with youth.
