The project allows 5th grade students to build their own melodic instrument. Students will get to keep their instrument at the end of the project and can use is to continue to play and create music. Because they created the instrument, there is more ownership and responsibility than with regular classroom instruments. The K-4 students will have the opportunity to hear Mr. Sutter, a professional musician, play multiple instruments such as the dulcimer, guitar, accordion, and others. They will also get to learn and participate in folk dances their regular music teacher has not taught them during regular music classes. These experiences will give them cultural connections they would not have made without the experiences of the residency. Students will demonstrate their proficiency with their new dulcimers by playing both in a group and individually. The music teacher will gather feedback from students about the residency by having them explain what they learned and perform a song they can play during music class and possibly in our online learning journals (which are shared with families). The students will also demonstrate their ability to perform as a group by playing several selections during a family event at the end of the residency.
