New speakers will be easier to set up and will improve the sound of the director's comments and introductions for the audience. It will be easier to attract percussionists if we have appropriate instruments available. The audience will get a better and more authentic rendition of a piece if all or most of the percussion parts able to be played. The percussionists will be able more easily access instruments during performances, and the instruments will be safer on trap tables than on horizontally-placed music stands. Our valuable drums will be safer on appropriate shelving than on the floor where they are stored now. Easier-to-move stand racks will save backs, toes, and help with portability. We plan on doing a brief survey of band members, especially percussionists and those who come early to set up and take down for rehearsals and concerts. It would be difficult to get useful survey results from our audiences, especially those at our outdoor concerts. We could just do a verbal survey, but we would like to also get some written comments which we expect will be positive.
During the MMEA All-State Camp I became more proficient at performing in front of others, something that usually unnerves me. One of my weakest areas in violin performance was my ability to play in a group, especially with a conductor or varying tempo. I was able to improve these skills during All-State, and while they are still not perfect, they are better. Also, my ability to bow smoothly and use more bow improved substantially. Another reason I enjoyed and appreciated the MMEA All-state camp was the sheer number of amazing musicians that allowed us to play such impressive works as Shostakovich's 10th symphony.
