Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Our school does not offer much in dramatics programs. We have a one-act play and a musical program but it has not been done the last few years and is only for high school students; not for elementary aged students. Our Children's Theater program is the only offering in the area for our youth. This program allows all children an opportunity to try it out without a huge commitment. Depending on their comfort level, we can offer an experience for them. They will have the opportunity to try something new, develop (or conquer their fear of) public speaking and performing, be a part of something (social interaction), express themselves artistically. On the last day of theater, students will complete an evaluation survey (young ones will meet with volunteers to complete it).

Measurable Outcome(s)

This one week residency provided thirty-one fourth graders with a solid experience with instrument-building skills not otherwise available. They learned about the dulcimer, how to build a one-string version of it, learned to play it, and taught younger students to play it! For many students, this was a first exposure to instrumental music. Students learned to play a variety of songs solo and with a group on their dulcimer and made a short video journal to document their dulcimer building. Since the end of the residency, the students have continued to play their dulcimers at school and have prepared for a little performance for the Preschool and Kindergarten classes. The students are excited to get to perform again!
