Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

GRIMBA defines artistic success for this project as the completion of a permanent sculpture that builds upon recreation themes at Tioga, is inspired by the surrounding landscape, and that enhances the overall experience of Tioga. Furthermore, the sculpture will be a result of meetings between Aaron, GRIMBA, and ICC students. In particular, the ICC students will be heavily involved in design creation, engineering, and problem solving. The sculpture will enrich Tioga's identity as a high-quality recreation destination for mountain bikers from around the region, state, and beyond. The sculpture will contribute to sense of place and inspire existing and visiting populations. In addition, while the sculpture will be a stand-alone art piece, nearby signage will serve to recognize the many foundational donors who helped make the Tioga Recreation area possible. Measurable outcomes include numbers of GRIMBA members participating, ICC students participating, and annual Tioga visitors/users. GRIMBA will oversee the project by engaging with the artist and ICC students to ultimately choose the final design. This process will be documented through meeting notes and design drawings to show that sufficient effort was made to include varied voices, consider the character of Tioga, and expand on existing elements. The artwork will be made of durable, long term materials that will require no maintenance. GRIMBA, along with Cohasset, will review and approve final placement and design. The number of volunteers who participate in the design process and creation of the artwork will be recorded. Additionally, the number of people attending the dedication of the artwork and subsequent related events will be recorded. The artwork will be documented throughout the process of design, construction, and installation. On a long-term basis the project will be judged on feedback from the community and the continued growth of residents and tourists using the Tioga Recreation Area.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The design was based on the use of core-10 steel as a way to reference the history and relevance of mining in Northern Minnesota. The steel will rust over time and will complement other design elements at Tioga. The design features eight panels that when viewed together create the image of a mountain bike and boulder. Approval of the design and planned location were sought from the DNR and City of Cohasset during summer 2020. Fabrication took place during summer 2020. Aaron purchased 30+ used mountain bike frames that were cut into sections and used to create support and visual interest between the panels. A donor list was created to recognize the many organizations and individuals that contributed to the Tioga project. This list was die-cut onto one of the panels included in the sculpture. Concrete footings for the sculpture were installed in October 2020 at the Tioga trailhead. The sculpture was installed by Aaron Squadroni and two volunteers over MEA weekend.
