Sumbal Mahmud

Sumbal Mahmud was born in Lahore, Pakistan. Her family immigrated to Minnesota when she was eighteen months old. Her family spoke a hybrid of Punjabi and Urdu at home and she remembers watching a lot of TV in the year before kindergarten in order to learn English. Sumbal has always been an avid reader. Books allowed her to travel the world while growing up in Minnesota. During college (at Hamline University), she was able to complete a term at the United Nations, and during law school (at the University of Minnesota Law School) she studied international law abroad in The Netherlands.
Sumbal is an attorney with a passion for human rights, advocacy for those living in extreme poverty, and the rule of law. As an attorney, she has worked as an Administrative Law Judge in the Department of Human Services, as an Asylum Officer for the Department of Homeland Security and as in-house counsel for Best Buy Corporation. Sumbal joins the Parks and Trails Legacy Advisory Committee because she wishes to ensure the funds allocated to the preservation of Minnesota’s Parks and Trails are used responsibly. She believes that the earth and all her natural wonders are given to us in trust from future generations. She lives in Medina, Minnesota with her husband and three children – Elias (7), Samara (5.5) and Zakariya (3).
