Project Overview

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Watershed Pollutant Load Monitoring Network (WPLMN) requests assistance from local partners to collect samples and field data at designated stream monitoring sites for the purpose of assessing water quality and calculating annual pollutant loads. The University of Minnesota Duluth's Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI-UMD) has a long-term interest in identifying status and trends that may reflect short- and long-term response to impacts at local, regional, and global scales such as urbanization, agriculture, mining and forestry practices, invasive species introductions, atmospheric deposition, and climate change. It has also worked collaboratively and in partnership with MPCA and other state, federal, and local agencies on a number of assessment projects, including several previously-funded SWA grants. NRRI –UMD will collect base flow and event-based water quality data from streams within the St. Louis River and Rainy watershed in northeastern Minnesota.
