Upon learning of State support for the Rochester project, the Museum implemented changes to our governance, staffing and operations structure to effectively expand our capacity. Initial exhibit, program, IT, marketing and communication plans have been launched for the opening. The Museum recently signed a lease agreement on a 5,000 square foot space that will provide engaging learning experiences for up to 30,000 anticipated visitors in the first year of operation. Per Minnesota Laws, 2011, 1st Special Session, Chapter 6, Article 4, Section 2, Subdivision 6, is for grants to the Minnesota Children's Museum. These amounts are for arts, arts education, and arts access and to preserve Minnesota's history and cultural heritage
Minnesota Public Radio is the state's largest cultural organization, providing 96 percent of the population with free access to some of the best broadcast cultural programming in the world. Minnesota Public Radio is using a grant from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund to implement projects around the following four goals:
• Promotion of Local Arts and Culture
• Presentation of Local Arts and Cultural Performances
• Contributions to Local Arts and Cultural Education
• Preservation and Promotion of Minnesota's History and Cultural Heritage
Per Minnesota Laws, 2011, 1st Special Session, Chapter 6, Article 4, Section 2, Subdivision 6, the Minnesota Department of Administration requested applications to create, produce, acquire, or distribute radio programs that educate, enhance, or promote local, regional, or statewide items of artistic, cultural, or historic significance. Preference was given to projects that expand Minnesotan’s access to knowledge, information, arts, state history, or cultural heritage.
During the 87th legislative session Minnesota Film and TV was allocated $1,000,000 for FY12 and FY13 from the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, MN Laws, 2011, 1st Special Session, Chapter 6, Articles 4 and 5. The appropriation of
$500,000 in FY2012 and $500,000 in FY2013 is split between grants to Minnesota residents to create film or television productions that promote Minnesota’s cultural heritage, and for the film production jobs program (Snowbate) under Minnesota statutes, section 116U.26. This appropriation is available until June 30, 2015.
The Minnesota legislature appropriated $198,000 for four projects: 1) Pavilion Preservation Project; 2) Zoo Main Building Planning Project; 3) Zoo Environmental Education Expansion; and 4) Zoo Cultural Research Project.
Per Minnesota Laws, 2011, 1st Special Session, Chapter 6, Article 4, Section 2, Subdivision 6, this funding is for grants to the Minnesota Public Television Association for production and acquisition grants accordance to Minnesota Statutes, section 129D.18.
The Science Museum of Minnesota’s work with schools is a continuation of efforts undertaken in the FY12-13 biennium, generously funded by an appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. With previous Legacy funds, we undertook a museum-wide evaluation of our offerings to schools and how we could better serve our student and educator audiences.
Minnesota’s 12 regional public library systems, which encompass 350 public libraries in all areas of the state, benefit from a portion of the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Through State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education, each regional public library system receives a formula-driven allocation from the annual $3 million Minnesota Regional Library Legacy Grant.
To complete the interior display areas of the historically accurate Forestry Ranger Station. Exhibits will feature the early history of forest fire fighting, an account of forestry activity on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, draft horse logging equipment, lumberjack tools, and a tribute to Paul Bunyon. Additionally, funds will be used for a stage where speakers can tell stories and teach about forestry stewardship.
To restore several Dakota City building exteriors on the fairgrounds, in collaboration with Dakota City Heritage Village. These local structures that portray a 1900 era rural village include the 1867 Vermillion Presbyterian Church, the belfry of the District 96 one room school, and the 1861 frame structure that was originally built as a school and most recently used as the millinery and dressmaker’s shop.
To document and display past and current county history through photographs at the Carver County Fair. Selected photographs will represent a cross-section of topics, people, and places in Carver County.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Minnesota Historical Society is creating a broad range of opportunities to help students, teachers and the general public learn more about the war and the role Minnesota played. Initiatives include:
To restore the old Carbine House on the fairgrounds. The Crow Wing County Fair will rehabilitate an historic house on the fairgrounds that was originally an old trading post and was later occupied by Duncan and Ella Carbine. They will work with the Historical Society to ensure that the restoration is done in a historically accurate manner.
Throughout FY12 and FY13, Minnesota Historical Society staff members have reached out to and met with many groups and individuals to gather their opinions and recommendations regarding an exhibit on and the commemoration of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Staff met with tribal councils in Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota, individuals from tribes in Minnesota and throughout the Midwest and residents of Brown and Nicollet Counties. In addition, the Society sponsored the "We Gather Together As One" Dakota nationwide conference in Minneapolis and St.
Minnesota Historical Society staff are working to serve Twin Cities area schools with increasingly diverse demographics. Staff are providing more support services for students competing in History Day and American Indian History Day. Staff are also promoting and recruiting students for programs that engage students in history like the American Indian Museum Fellowship Program and the Summer History Immersion Program. These funds also provide general staff and logistical support for diversity outreach efforts.
