The Science Museum of Minnesota’s work with schools is a continuation of efforts undertaken in the FY12-13 biennium, generously funded by an appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. With previous Legacy funds, we undertook a museum-wide evaluation of our offerings to schools and how we could better serve our student and educator audiences.

As a core to Como’s mission on education, updating the aging interpretive signage and adding interactive and technology based interpretive and hands-on experiences is important. The cost to develop, design and produce these items is needed for African Hoofstock, Large Cats and the Japanese Gardens. The displays will demonstrate Como Zoo’s commitment to world-wide conservation measures.

Upon learning of State support for the Rochester project, the Museum implemented changes to our governance, staffing and operations structure to effectively expand our capacity. Initial exhibit, program, IT, marketing and communication plans have been launched for the opening. The Museum recently signed a lease agreement on a 5,000 square foot space that will provide engaging learning experiences for up to 30,000 anticipated visitors in the first year of operation. During the 87th legislative session Minnesota Film and TV was allocated $1,000,000 for FY12 and FY13 from the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, MN Laws, 2011, 1st Special Session, Chapter 6, Articles 4 and 5. The appropriation of
$500,000 in FY2012 and $500,000 in FY2013 is split between grants to Minnesota residents to create film or television productions that promote Minnesota’s cultural heritage, and for the film production jobs program (Snowbate) under Minnesota statutes, section 116U.26. This appropriation is available until June 30, 2015.

The Minnesota Historical Society partnered with the 70 Years Project to begin development of a web site that will enable all Minnesotans to again share in the tragedies and triumphs of the 1,345 days of World War II.  The site will feature oral histories from World War II veterans as well as a wartime headline taken from Minnesota newspapers for every day of the war.  The web site will serve as a resource for the general public, as well as for the relatives of the more than 300,000 Minnesotans who fought in the war.
